12:08 East of Bucharest

(A fost sau n-a fost)
Corneliu Porumboiu / RUM, 2006
Romanian version / English subtitles / translated to Czech, 89 min

At 12:08 p.m. on December 22, 1989, dictator Nicolae Ceausescu fled Romania in a helicopter, as the presidential palace was being swarmed by protestors. The film is centered around a television debate shown on a small-town station, taking place exactly sixteen years after the Revolution. Two dubious guests of the show revel in the glory of the Revolution, proudly sharing stories of their heroic contributions to the town’s own rebellion - but when viewers begin to phone in with their own recollections their testimonies cast doubt on the self-proclaiming militants’ lofty assertions. Did anybody, in fact, rush to the town square to chant against Ceausescu before that crucial moment eight minutes after noon?
