English/Danish version, English subtitles, 17 min
How did it happen that in Copenhagen, Denmark everyday a third of its population travels around on bikes? The argument “this is simply Denmark, things were always like this around here” is not the right answer.
In 1963 Copenhagen was packed with cars. The atmosphere of the sixties and seventies brought a discussion on life conditions and the result of it was a strong political verdict. Cars are too expensive for the majority of people to use in everyday life!
Price is not only the question of fuel, but most of all it is the question of wasted environment, pollution, noise, erosion and the omnipresent danger. Citizens of Copenhagen decided that they’re not willing to pay this price for the comfy cabin of their car.
Today Copenhagen is one of the best places for living in Europe. After arrival you can read a proud sign at the airport “Welcome to Copenhagen – Europe’s green capital”.
