Journey of a Red Fridge

A red Coca Cola fridge wanders around a valley beneath Annapurna in Nepal. The appliance's pilgrimage is entwined with the experiences of its young carrier Hari Rai. Like many of his peers, he has undertaken such heavy work due to a lack of employment in the region and to earn enough money to finance his studies. Juvenile boys in Nepal commonly carry loads of up to 100 kilos, bearing whatever is needed by either villagers or tourists in this hard to reach corner of the Himalayas. The film resists making a cheap contrast between this symbol of multinational business and the beauty of the mountainous terrain; instead it presents an authentic portrait of the development of a region influenced by tourism, extreme natural conditions and unique living circumstances. Hari Rai accompanies his journey with commentary about Nepalese society, meets villagers who put live chickens in the fridge for food and speaks about his own dreams and ambitions.
