The Crown

Maria is an assassin, Viviana is a guerilla fighter, Angela is a thief and hustler and Angie is a member of a band of robbers. Apart from a wild past, they have in common a very unhappy present behind the walls of a female prison in Bogota. And furthermore, one additional thing makes them similar: they all wish to be crowned as the most beautiful prisoner. Everyone of them represents one prison block whose inmates support their candidate as much as they can – one is doing their new hairstyle, the other is lending their gown, the third is doing their makeup… and all of them support them frenetically and loudly. This 40-minute-documentary directed by Amanda Micheli and Isabel Vega offers an unusual and engaging view behind prison walls. The Crown received the Honorable Mention at Sundance and was also nominated for an Oscar.
