(Anita O‘Day: The Life of a Jazz Singer)
R. Cavolina - I. McCrudden / USA, 2007
English version / Czech subtitles, 90 min
She may have survived heroin addiction, alcoholism, incarceration, four failed marriages and a rape, but Anita O'Day was nobody's victim. (Little wonder her final album, released months before her death in 2006 at age 87, was titled Indestructible.) Great-looking, tough-talking and a self-professed "good loser," the "Jezebel of Jazz" went through it all over a seven-decade career, always emerging with a grin and a song. This loving portrait covers the trend-defying, taboo-busting singer's adversities, but most of all it celebrates O'Day's rich, smoky vocals, unique phrasing, improvisational flair and captivating stage presence, providing ample evidence of her place in the pantheon of jazz queens.
