(Laya Project)
Harold Monfils / IND - MAL, 2007
English, Hindu, Thai / English subtitles, 68 min
Though it was shot in remote coastal towns and villages in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, the Maldives, Myanmar and India in the months after the devastating 2004 tsunami, Laya Project is no disaster film.
This visually sumptuous documentary tracks a team from Indian record label EarthSync that traveled deep into the affected area for more than a year capturing performances by local folk musicians, many never before recorded or filmed. Rather than focusing on the storm's toll, Laya Project pays tribute to the survivors, celebrating the resilience of the human spirit as it exposes a dizzying array of musical traditions and their deep connection to the communities that gave them birth.
The partner of the screening is the International Music Films Festival Music On Film/Film On Music.
