(Planet B-Boy)
Benson Lee / USA, 2008
English-French version / Czech and English subtitles, 98 min
What is a b-boy? A 12-year-old blond kid from Paris. A South Korean teen facing army service. A Japanese tea-shop clerk. As far as mainstream culture is concerned, breakdancing disappeared in the 1980s, killed off by commercialization and overexposure. But this acrobatic art born in the Bronx three decades ago has not only survived, it's gone global. Benson Lee's kinetic doc focuses on crews from France, Japan, Korea and the US as they prepare for breaking's biggest international stage, the annual Battle of the Year, telling the dancers' personal stories and showing how all stamp classic b-boy style with their own national identity, culminating in a dazzling showdown of mad skills and impossible moves.
