Takushi Tsubokawa / J, 2005
Japanese version / English and Czech subtitles, 94 min
The debut feature of solitary filmmaker Takushi Tsubokawa is a tranquil and beautiful homage to the past, mainly to silent movies of the thirties. Three time lines intertwine in the film: In the present a young woman struggles with buried issues of her past as she tries to connect with her family; in Japan of the thirties her grandfather is strongly affected by the ending of a silent film; and the silent film itself which tells of an ill-fated romance. Awarded the Grand Prix in Turin, the film can be seen as a comment on contemporary Japan which tries to disconnect from its past.
