The Miracle of Candeal

Candeal is a marginal area in the heart of Salvador, the capital of Bahia and home of musician Carlinhos Brown, famed percussionist and leader of the bloco-afro group Timbalada. The film is a stunning parable of how a notorious slum transformed itself into a model community through the power of music, pushed along by Brown's commitment to the local youth. The film also reveals a larger picture: the encounter of Cuba and Brazil (specifically Havana and Bahia) and the African roots shared by both, as personified by the Grammy Award-winning Cuban pianist Bebo Valdes, as he visits Brown and searches for his African roots in Salvador de Bahia, the blackest of Brazilian cities. Candeal es un barrio pobre perdido en medio del Salvador, capital de la provincia brasileña Bahía. Es también tierra natal del músico Carlinhos Brown, un percusionista famoso y figura líder del grupo bloco-afro Timbalada. La película es una parábola arrebatadora de una metamorfosis de una favela en una comunidad especial, gracias a la fuerza de la música y gracias al cuidado personal que les da Brown a los jóvenes del barrio. La película analiza la problemática también en un marco cultural más amplio, mostrando la relación entre Cuba y Brasil (La Habana y Bahía en especial) y raíces comunes africanas.
