(Our Street)
Marcin Latallo / PL, 2008
original version / English and Czech subtitles, 80 min
The working class Furmanczyk family has been living in the same flat in the Polish city of Łódź for five generations, and many members have worked at the textiles plant across the street. Once one of the biggest factories of its kind in Europe, it was shut down after the fall of communism. Now a French investor has started building a gigantic shopping centre on the site, representing an end to a way of life for the Furmanczyks. The grandmother, whose pension supports the whole family, lives in the past. The unemployed father turns to the bottle, while the daughter - whose boyfriend is in jail - abandons her child. Marcin Latallo's film, narrated by the director himself, is an affecting portrait of a meeting between a filmmaker and an ordinary family whose lives have been indelibly marked by the results of the post-communist transformation of Eastern Europe.
