Memories of Murder

(Salinui chueok)
Bong Joon-ho / Korea, 2003
Korean / English subtitles, 130 min

A young woman who left for a blind date is later found naked in a drainpipe. As the murder spree continues, women avoid leaving their homes after dark. A special taskforce is set up, but the investigation is going nowhere. Not a trace is left behind at meticulously cleaned-up crime scenes. The story was inspired by real events – a series of unsolved murders which happened between 1986 and 1991 in the small town of Hwa-sung not far from Seoul. Over the course of six years, ten women were raped and murdered within a radius of two kilometres. For surprising skill in the mixing of genres which reveals a brilliant cinematographic talent.

Bong Joon-ho made his feature debute Barking Dogs Never Bite in 1999. Internationaly acclaimed title Memories of Murder is his second feature.
