Titus Munteanu / RUM, 2003
Romanian version / English subtitles, 90 min
What happens to an innocent man who, after long physical and psychological torture, confesses his guilt even though he has committed no offence? He is condemned to twenty-five years in prison, but, in reality, he is doomed for the remainder of his life since even when the real culprit confesses to his crime a few years later, our hero cannot come to terms with what he has endured. The story, which begins in the 1970s, has prompted great discussion in Romania on the country‘s totalitarian past and its effect on the present. To this day, the relationship between tormentor and prisoner embodies the obstacles to resolving the moral conflicts of a post-totalitarian society.
