Sylvain Chomet / F, 2013
French version / Czech subtitles, 102 min
The first non-animated film of distinctive animator, and creator of the Triplets of Belleville is a cathartic journey into the depths of the French soul.
The mythical figure of Attila Marcel straddles the worlds of Jacques Tati, Jean-Pierre Jeunet and the well-tried poetic expression of Sylvain Chomet himself. The film is literally teeming with visual puns, gags, ornery characters, nutty Broadway songs and whacky music. The result is a rapturously bizarre comedy of surprises, the likes of which have not been seen for a long time. Much as the petite Madeleine, the hero’s favorite dessert, which is outwardly unassuming, yet conceals within a supple center of bursting flavor.
