The Confession begins Father James’ week-long Calvary in a small Irish town. He sets out to meet all its inhabitants, and finds each to be eccentric in his own way. The aging priest’s sarcastic pilgrimage towards death is full of black humor, although the film is not a true comedy. It’s a subtle allegory of a society filled with people who have no purpose or place in life. Irish actor Brendan Gleeson, along with comedians Dylan Moran, Chris O’Dowd, dominate this film, which has picked up several awards, notably the Ecumenical Jury Prize at last year’s Berlinale.
