(The Great Rock 'n Roll Swindle)
Julien Temple / VB, 1979
English version / Czech subtitles, 103 min
The riotous, legendary and until recently seldom-seen fake documentary on the rise and fall of punk rock's most notorious group, the Sex Pistols. Combining explosive concert footage of the band at their peak, camp English stylizations, Situationist posturing, Godard-influenced filmic interventions and over-the-top animated sequences with verve and sheer brazenness, the film sets out to portray the group's success as an elaborate and conspiratorial ruse foisted on an unsuspecting public (and gullible record executives) by their scheming and manipulative manager, self-styled 'art crime' mastermind Malcolm McLaren. "We set out to lie, and we did so quite successfully" - Malcolm McLaren. "I hate, loathe and despise that film" - John Lydon.
