original version / English & Czech subtitles, 48 min

Mozart in Meadowlands presents the story of Michael Masote, a well-loved teacher and community leader who tirelessly propagated his love for Western classical music in some of South Africa's most oppressed communities at a time when most cultural discourse was part of political struggle. Masote dedicated his life to bringing the music of Mozart, Handel and other European composers into the townships of Soweto, overcoming extraordinary political and financial hardship to do so. The documentary is also the story of Masote's dream to translate Handel's Messiah into all eleven official languages of South Africa. It demanded more than 20 years of fervent work, but today the African Messiah is one of the highlights of the local musical calendar.
