Sounds of Silence

(Sot-e sokout)
Amir Hamz, Mark Lazars / Iran-NĚM-VB, 2006
original version / English & Czech subtitles, 86 min

An inside view of the struggle of the burgeoning pop music scene of Tehran against censorship and government interference, Sounds of Silence reveals a truly underground music scene. Hidden far beneath the headline-grabbing antics of the Iranian government and its Ministry of Islamic Guidance, an entire culture lies submerged, one in which contemporary progress and cultural heritage are in constant and lively dialogue. Focusing on several musicians, including an alternative rock band, an angry rapper and an experimental electronica outfit, the film demonstrates how internet portals and file-sharing are, for some, not merely a trendy platform for promotion, but the only possible option for making and distributing their music at all.
